Youth Suicide
Youth suicide is a public health issue.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-14.
1 in 13 teenagers will attempt suicide.
Youth in the juvenile justice system have an increased risk for suicide and it is the leading cause of death for confined youth.
Risk factors for suicide include
Mental health disorders
History of trauma or abuse
Alcohol and other substance use disorders
Implosive and/or aggressive tendencies
Major physical illnesses
Previous suicide attempt(s)
Family history of suicide
Job or financial loss
Loss of relationship(s)
Easy access to lethal means
Local clusters of suicide
Lack of social support and sense of isolation
Stigma associated with asking for help
Lack of healthcare or access to healthcare such as mental health and substance abuse treatment
Exposure to others who have died by suicide (in real life or via media or internet)
Involvement in special education
Legal/disciplinary action
Referral to juvenile court or confined placement
Warning Signs
Disturbed sleep pattern
Anxiety or agitation
Extreme thoughts of self-hatred
Feeling like they don’t belong
Hopelessness
Irritability and rage
Feeling trapped or powerless
Feeling that they are a burden to others
Significant or sudden changes in mood or behaviors
Loss of interest in pleasurable activities
Preparing for suicide

Talking about death, wanting to die or kill oneself

It is imperative to partner up with community agencies working towards preventing suicide deaths and educating the public about suicide awareness. Youth’s are managing several life complexities that increase their vulnerability to suicide by death. Help us prevent death by suicide and end a person’s intersubjective suffering, to help them conclude suicide is not considered a viable option. Help us be the solution that allows them to experience a satisfying and meaningful life.
